Takasaki City Theatre : La Traviata
2025-05-12
Hewett was asked to paint the backdrop for the opera La Traviata, performed at Takasaki City Theatre on May 3, 2025.
Hewett’s painting entitled: Broken Heart, is inspired by the story of La Traviata. The moon represents both the night scenes in the Paris Salon where Violeta and Alfredo meet and also their time together in the country. The large brush strokes forming a broken heart symbolize the unfulfilled love they both suffer.
The white dots are a symbol of the timing of the second act in February. On the lower right sign is an image of a dilapidated fence from Alfredo’s country home.
Hewett painted this work in Nagano where he has a studio over the months of February and March.
